WHO IS CYNDA?

Many of you know me as your neighbor, a friend, your Realtor, and the owner of the Cynda Sells Real Estate, where I’ve served this community for over 31 years. Some of you may know me more recently as your District 3 Councilperson.  I want you to know a little bit more about me, why I have worked so hard to own and succeed in a business which has led me to want to run for Mayor of Lee’s Summit!

I’ve called Lee’s Summit home for  50 years. In 1975, my husband and I moved here to buy our first home and raise our children. From the moment my kids entered grade school, I got involved, rolling up my sleeves with the Prairie View PTA.  Whether it was VP, membership chair, working as a teacher’s aid, teaching kids about nutrition or collaborating with the principal and teachers to create a code of ethics for our school, these were some of the most important and rewarding days of my life. I have always felt there is nothing more important than the health and well being of our children and parental involvement is crucial.

Then after 18 years of marriage, my life changed in an instant. I lost my husband unexpectedly and found myself a single mother of three - with no job and no clear path forward.

These were challenging times for my family but it wasn't the first time I’d faced hardship. My mother raised four children on her own, sometimes having three jobs at once to keep the wolves from the door. It was an impoverished life, but Mom used to tell us kids, “Hard times are the best times to learn how to face adversity.  We will face hard times and solve our own problems—there is always a way-we just have to find it”.

With her words in my heart, I took a leap of faith. I obtained a real estate license and started a construction company with a little money I had saved. I began building and selling homes. It wasn’t easy—there were many sleepless nights, long hours, and moments of deep doubt. But I was determined to prove to my kids—and to myself—that we could overcome anything.

NEVER GIVING UP!

Never willing to give up, I worked very hard and my business grew. I became the broker of a large real estate company, managing, recruiting, and mentoring  hundreds of agents. It was rewarding to see others succeed in this tough business.I published a book entitled “Insider’s Secrets Sell Real Estate Like a Pro” which is an instructional manual to teach agents how to succeed in Real Estate.   I developed new homes subdivisions and grew a team of agents . 

This led me to become interested in  our City government since building and developing was a large part of my business.  I began volunteering on city boards and commissions—learning, listening, and contributing. Over the next decade, I served on the Tax Review Board, the Water Utilities Board, and the Planning Commission and now City Council. These experiences have given  me a deep understanding of how our city functions, the opportunity to become more a part of the decision making process and why good leadership matters.

WHY THE MAYOR?

 I am running for Mayor to bring a fresh perspective, a strong work ethic, and a deep, personal commitment to the people of Lee’s Summit. I’ve lived the challenges many of you face. I know what it means to struggle, and to fight for a better future.

As your Mayor, I’ll work tirelessly to make sure our city continues to grow smartly, remains safe and welcoming. I will always champion the amazing features of our great city Lee's Summit!!
